The following information is meant to support CSWAs in meeting supervision requirements for the Oregon Board of Licensed Social Worker. Information does change from time to time and CSWAs are responsible for verifying current board requirements.
CSWAs Requirements and Paperwork
LCSW Qualifications
In order to complete the CSWA Program and qualify for the LCSW you must have:
- 3500 Clinical practice hours
- 2000 of those hours must be direct client
- 100 hours of supervision, of which at least 50 must be individual
- a minimum of 24 months of supervised practice
- Passed the ASWB clinical exam
CSWAs are responsible for reviewing and following CSWA requirements including scheduling required supervision hours, submitting timely paperwork, and reporting plan changes to the social work board as needed.
Oregon Board of Licensed Social Worker (OBLSW) Information:
OBLSW Supervision Verification for ASWB Exam (75 hours/18 months needed)
Required Hours:
Minimum 2 hours per month & 2 separate sessions per month
Supervision must occur a minimum of twice per month for at least one hour. One session for 2 hours does not meet this requirement. There is no maximum of supervision as long as the supervision meets the criteria in the rules and laws listed on the board website. Not meeting the minimum requirement of supervision may result in board action, or loss of hours. There is no limit to how you develop your plan, or how many supervisors you have. The rules do state that you must be with each supervisor for a minimum of six months before submitting a plan change. Each plan change must be approved by the board, before it comes into effect. Hours will not be backdated to the date you change your supervisors. The plan approval date is the start date.
Paperwork Overview:
The following information is meant to support social workers pursuing their LCSW in understanding the processes in place by the OregonBoard of Licensed Social Workers (OBLSW). This information does change from time to time and it is recommended that you review current requirements on the board website.
- Application and Plan Changes: Social workers must submit an initial application for CSWA that includes a place of employment and plan for supervision. CSWAs are responsible for submitting a plan change to the board whenever there is a change in employer or supervisor. All plans must be approved before a CSWA can begin counting hours
- Annual Renewal: You must renew your CSWA Annually. Go into the license renewal tab on the portal and complete the renewal including paying the annual renewal fee. Renewal is due before the last day of your birth month
- Supervision Reports: Supervision reports are completed with the CSWA and supervisor together. These reports are due within 30 days of the last day of your birth month and ½ birthday month. For example, if the CSWA has a birthday in May, their reporting period will end May 31 and the report will need to be submitted in the social work portal by June 30th at the latest. If their birthday is in May, they will have an additional report that goes through November 30th (the month of their ½ birthday) and will need to be submitted in the portal by December 30th at the latest.
- Inactive Status: If a CSWA has a period longer than 3 weeks that they are not working within their current plan, they must inform the board that they are going “inactive” through the social work portal. After this occurs, they will not be able to count work or supervision hours until they have submitted a status change to the board to “re-active” through the portal. If the job or supervisor changes then the CSWA will need to submit a plan change to be reviewed by the board.
